PDFs with watermark, stamps or PDF/A

The need for PDFs is ubiquitous, and if you are running Vault, you may want to generate PDFs automatically at certain lifecycle states or transitions. You may already know that powerJobs helps you doing this out of the box. However, we frequently get asked about watermarking or stamps PDFs, or to convert them into PDF/A for long time archiving.

In order to create such PDFs, 3rd party products solves the problem. We created 2 tutorials that guides you through this process and explains which tools to use and how. The tutorials also provide a complete code you can reuse with powerJobs. Here the link to the tutorials: watermark and PDF/A. We also created a video that show you these features in action.

For watermarking we use iTextSharp, which is the .Net version of iText. Although iText is open source, it does not mean that it’s free. There are some license implications that suggest to purchase a license, read more here: http://itextpdf.com/terms-of-use/index.php. Here an excerpt from the terms of use:

Buying such a license is mandatory as soon as you develop commercial activities distributing the iText software inside your product or deploying it on a network without disclosing the source code of your own applications under the AGPL license. These activities include: offering paid services to customers as an ASP, serving PDFs on the fly in the cloud or in a web application, shipping iText with a closed source product.

The tool works very well, and it’s worth his money! As a reseller, you may want to purchase a OEM licenses, which contains 25 licenses, which you can use with your customers.  Anyway, the iText library is absolutely cool, so the purchase of a license is at least about supporting the development of a great tool!! For details about the license contact directly iText.

For the PDF/A we use GhostScript. We tried different tools for creating PDF/A and tested the outcome with different online validators, like PDF-Tools or PDF/A validator. The result some somewhat disappointing. Just GhostScript really created an almost perfect PDF/A.

So, if you like to create your own watermarked PDFs or convert them to PDF/A, then use powerJobs with your Vault Jobprocessor and walk through these tutorials: How to create PDF/A and How to watermark PDFs

We hope you enjoy this information and as usual, feedback is welcome!
